Privacy Policy
Last updated 19 August 2026 · applies to Shutterbox version 1.0.0
Shutterbox does not collect, transmit, store on a server, or sell any data. It has no analytics, no accounts, no telemetry and no third-party services. The extension makes no network requests of any kind. Your screenshots and recordings never leave your computer unless you save or share them yourself.
What Shutterbox does with your data
Shutterbox captures screenshots and screen recordings when you ask it to. That material is handled entirely inside your browser:
| What | Where it goes | How long it stays |
|---|---|---|
| A screenshot you capture |
chrome.storage.local on your own computer, so the editor tab can pick
it up
|
Until the next capture replaces it |
| A recording you make | Kept in memory in the extension's background page | Released as soon as the result page has taken a copy |
| A file you save | Your ordinary downloads folder, through Chrome's download manager | Yours to keep or delete |
| An image you copy | Your system clipboard | Until you copy something else |
Permissions and why they exist
Shutterbox asks for no permission to read the sites you visit. It has no
host_permissions, so it can only touch a page at the moment you invoke it —
by clicking the toolbar icon, pressing a keyboard shortcut, or using its context-menu entry.
| Permission | What it is used for |
|---|---|
activeTab |
Capture and measure the tab you are looking at, only for as long as the action you started takes |
scripting |
Run the area-selection overlay and read the page's height in order to stitch a full page capture |
tabCapture |
Record the current tab when you choose that mode |
offscreen |
Provide the hidden document needed to write to the clipboard and to run the media recorder |
storage, unlimitedStorage |
Hand a captured image to the editor tab. Full page screenshots exceed the default 10 MB quota, hence the second one |
downloads |
Save a screenshot or recording to your disk when you press Save |
contextMenus |
Add the right-click capture entries |
Recording a window or your whole screen uses the browser's own
getDisplayMedia picker, which requires no permission and always asks you to
choose what to share.
Children
Shutterbox is a general-purpose utility. It collects nothing from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Shutterbox handles data differently, this page will be updated before that version is published, and the date at the top will change.
